Harnessing the potential of EMR Reminders, one can build powerful reminders to improve workflow and efficiency. The following is an example of advancing from a typical Reminder to update renal function labs, to a much more complex and powerful Reminder.

In my practice of approximately 1700 patients, the original reminder generated a list of 133 patients. However, some of these patients had stable renal function for over two years, and therefore did not really need their renal function updated every 6 months. The revised Reminder refined the list to a more appropriate list of 89 patients.

In this one example alone, reducing a patient recall list from 133 to 89 patients equates to a reduction of 33% in needless recall, effort, time, and cost.
